What Is Ionizing Radiation

Electromagnetic radiation can be divided into two categories: ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is radiation that causes the ionization of matter, destroying the structure of atoms or molecules. X-rays, alpha rays, beta rays, and gamma rays all belong to the category of ionizing radiation.

Ionizing radiation can be divided into natural radiation and artificial radiation. Natural radiation is present throughout nature, such as radioactive elements. The water we drink and the air we breathe contain trace amounts of radioactive elements, and there are also radioactive elements in our bodies. Artificial radiation includes nuclear explosions, radiation generated during nuclear energy production, and radiation generated when medical irradiation equipment is used.

The human body, if it is exposed to long-term or high-intensity ionizing radiation, will endanger the health and even cause cancer. However, complete isolation from ionizing radiation is neither possible nor necessary. As long as the amount of radiation received by the human body does not exceed a certain standard, it can be considered safe.
