Types of Water Meter

01/

Displacement meters:These devices measure the amount of water within any given space. The flow of water displaces the measuring part of the water meter according to volume expressed in either cubic feet or gallons. A mutating disk or a piston are used to control the movements of the magnet that serves to activate the register of the water volume.

02/

Positive displacement meters:These devices are also extremely common for small businesses and different types of residential properties. They’re also ideal for measuring small amounts of water that pass through the meter at a low rate of flow. They are very accurate and help keep good track of the amount of water your property uses.

03/

Velocity meters:These meters measure the speed of the water as it passes through the device. From there, they convert the velocity of water through the specific volume of the meter and the user receives a measurement of water consumption in cubic feet or gallons. Velocity meters come in several different types.

04/

Multiple and single-jet meters:These meters implement velocity measurements to determine water consumption. Water goes through the impeller that rotates at a set speed that the device compares to the speed of passing water. These devices are best for low-volume uses, as impellers are unable to withstand very high rates.

05/

Compound meters:A compound meter is excellent in environments in which the flow rate varies from high to low velocities. These meters consist of two components for measuring, as well as a valve control used to control the flow rate in each of the components.

06/

Turbine meters:These meters are suitable for pipes with diameters of as much as 12”. They’re best for high-volume and high-flow rate applications at various commercial and industrial sites, such as large offices and factories. They’re also good for measuring water volumes across different parts of a city or a town.

Application of Water Meter

Water flow meters are used to measure the volume of water used in commercial and residential buildings. The water is supplied to homes and offices via a public water supply system. Water meters may also be used at water sources or throughout the water system to calculate the flow rate of a part of the system.

How to maintain Water Meter

A smart water meter is an instrument that can automatically record and transmit water volume data, and it provides users with convenient and accurate water bill calculation and payment services. However, smart water meters also require regular maintenance and maintenance to ensure their normal and stable work.
First of all, we should pay attention to the installation location of the smart water meter. The smart water meter should be installed in a horizontal position and cannot be tilted or inverted, otherwise, it will affect the accuracy of its measurement and transmission. At the same time, we must keep the area around the smart water meter clean to avoid contamination or corrosion of the smart water meter by dust, oil, acid, alkali, etc., which will cause damage or errors to the smart water meter. In addition, we must also pay attention to moisture and mildew, especially in wet or rainy seasons. Regularly check whether there is water seepage or mildew in the smart water meter. If so, it should be dealt with or replaced in time.
Secondly, we must pay attention to the cleaning and disinfection of smart water meters. Due to long-term use, some scale, impurities, or bacteria will accumulate inside the smart water meter, which will affect the accuracy of the measurement and transmission of the smart water meter, and even cause harm to the health of users. Therefore, we need to clean and disinfect the smart water meter regularly, and it is generally recommended to do it every six months or a year. There are many ways to clean and disinfect, you can use professional cleaning agents or disinfectants, and you can also use hot water or high-pressure water to rinse. However, before cleaning and disinfecting, we must first turn off the power of the smart water meter and remove the battery or power cord to prevent the risk of electric shock or short circuits.
Finally, we must pay attention to the protection and maintenance of smart water meters. During use, we do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of the smart water meter, so as not to crush or scratch the smart water meter.

FAQ

Q: How are water meters read remotely?

A: We have Pulse-Output Water Meters that have a pulse output that can be read remotely. For each unit of water that flows by the meter produces an electrical pulse that can be measured from a distance.

Q: How are water meters read remotely?

A: If you want to go back to unmetered charges before the full two years, you'll have to pay for water and sewerage services used up to that date. Don't forget you will not be able to switch back to unmetered charges if: you have had a meter for more than two years.

Q: How do I monitor my water meter?

A: Furthest right on the row of numbers are white numbers on a black background. These record 1's and 10's of cubic feet. Each time the sweep hand goes full circle, 1 cubic foot of water passes through the meter and the farthest right number increases by one. Note: 1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons of water.

Q: Are water meters read automatically?

A: Automatic meter reading (AMR) is the technology of automatically collecting consumption, diagnostic, and status data from water meter or energy metering devices (gas, electric) and transferring that data to a central database for billing, troubleshooting, and analyzing.

Q: How often are water meters read?

A: Once every two years
If you have a water meter, it should be read at least once a year, and read by your water company at least once every two years. Some water companies might read your meter more frequently. Often the water meter is installed so that your company can read the meter remotely.

Q: How can I check the accuracy of my water meter?

A: To make it easier to read, fill a 5-gallon bucket three times over, to use 15 gallons of water – and your meter reading should've gone up by two. If the meter moves as you expect it to, it's more than likely working correctly – but if not, the problem could be with the meter itself.

Q: What is the average life of a water meter?

A: 15 to 20 years
The typical useful life for a water meter is 15 to 20 years. Older meters tend to be less accurate and more prone to maintenance issues.

Q: What should a water meter reading look like?

A: On the meter face there are two sets of numbers, black on the left and red on the right. The black numbers show the number of cubic metres used, while the red ones and the dials show litres. When submitting a meter reading, only read the black numbers and ignore the red numbers (one cubic metre = 1,000 litres).

Q: Is it cheaper to have a water meter?

A: Having a water meter means you only pay for the water you use. So, that could either mean significant savings for your household, or bigger bills. If you don't have a water meter, it means you pay a fixed price for your water. It doesn't matter how much water you use, your water bill won't change.

Q: Do water meters need calibrating?

A: Calibration is vital for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of water meters. Over time, factors such as wear and tear, environmental conditions, and meter drift can affect the meter's performance.

Q: What is the most accurate water meter?

A: The magnetic (mag meter) or electromagnetic water meter is optimum for water and wastewater applications and offers long-term reliability and stability. Magmeters have no moving parts, require minimal maintenance, have low repair costs, and measure volumetric flow with high accuracy.

Q: Is a water meter the same as a smart water meter?

A: Here are some key differences between smart water meters and regular dial-type water meters: Smart water meters transmit data to a central database, while regular water meters do not. This allows businesses and homeowners to access their water usage data easily and in real time.

Q: How does a water meter work?

A: All of the water that enters the building is measured. The water that passes through the water meter spins a built-in device. Each full spin of the device measures a specific amount of water; that amount is instantly shown on the display on top of the water meter in cubic meters.

Q: What depth should a water meter be?

A: 750mm min. Internal meter installation The water meter should be located within the property at the point of entry. You must install a suitably approved concentric meter housing on the supply pipe at the point of entry, directly above the stop tap.

Q: Do water meters have sensors?

A: Smart water meters rely on solid-state technology in compact, weatherproof housing. They have sensors that measure the water flow as it passes through them.

Q: Can you have a smart water meter?

A: Smart water meters allow you to automatically track the amount of water you use. They also allow us to find and fix leaks more quickly.

Q: What should a water meter look like?

A: Your water meter is a round, plastic box. It usually has a small, hinged cover. When you open the cover of the round box, you will see 5 digits on a black background and 3 digits on a red black ground. Some water meters have 4 digits on a black background.

Q: Is it cheaper to have a smart meter installed?

A: Energy suppliers install smart meters at no extra cost. Smart meters are paid for in the same way as traditional meters. As with traditional meters, the cost of smart meter installation and maintenance is covered by standing charges. Standing charges are fixed daily amounts included in your energy bills.

Q: Where should a water meter be installed?

A: Normally we try to fit the meter as near to the property boundary as possible. Sometimes this may be just outside the boundary in the pavement.
