Shortwave And Satellite Phones Are Primary Tools for Emergency Communications

There are two aspects of disaster relief communications that have left deep inspiration for the industry:

One is that the earthquake damaged almost all daily communication systems, including wired telephones and the Internet, mobile phones, and ultra-short-wave trucking. Second, the communication in the initial stage of disaster relief mainly relied on two tools, short-wave radio and satellite mobile phones. The reason why daily communication systems are paralyzed in major disasters is that disasters often destroy the basic conditions on which they operate, such as optical cables and microwave lines, power systems, communication hub buildings, and antenna towers. This shows that the survivability of these daily communication systems is very poor, and they are often powerless in the face of disasters.

The reason why short-wave radio and satellite phones can serve as the backbone emergency communication tool in case of sudden disaster lies in their irreplaceable independent communication capability and anti-destruction capability. They work independently of the ground communication network and power system (car radios can work for a day or a few days on a car battery). In disasters and wars, the probability that all shortwave radios and satellite phones will be destroyed is extremely low. As long as a few of these devices survive, it will not be difficult to report the disaster situation in time, and the initial disaster relief communication will not become a problem.

Any communication technology, like everything else, has advantages and disadvantages. Short-wave radio and satellite phone are the supplements to the "disadvantages" of various daily communication systems in emergency communication. In the past few years, many users, including the communication management departments of some large units, did not pay attention to short-wave communication and even think that short-wave should be eliminated. As an example, it can be seen that most local colleges and universities do not have shortwave subjects, and some radio undergraduates do not even have shortwave courses, and it is difficult to buy shortwave books on the market, which is abnormal. During the disaster, the public and private communication networks that were usually used were destroyed. For a period of time, shortwave and satellite phones were used to direct disaster relief. However, due to the lack of attention to shortwaves in peacetime, the disaster situation could not be reported in the early stage of the disaster, and the radio station was not enough during the disaster relief. Although many shortwave radio stations were tuned in later, but because it was rarely used in normal times, it was naturally not used well in an emergency, and it could not play a good role, resulting in passive. After the painful lessons, leading agencies at all levels have begun to attach importance to short-wave communication. When building an emergency communication network, short-wave is generally mentioned as an important position. This shift in perception is profound. Satellite phones are also the main communication tools in disaster relief communications. However, due to the weather and the excessive increase in the number of users, the satellite resources are tight, and it is not easy to get through the phone. In addition, the cost of satellite calls is very high, and it is difficult to promote the use of satellites in grassroots units. Of course, under war conditions, the problem of enemy destruction of communication satellites must be considered. The short-wave radio is transmitted through the ionosphere, and the autonomy of communication is stronger than that of satellites, and the communication is free of charge, which is conducive to mass promotion. The disadvantage is that the antenna is bulky and sometimes noisy. If the reliability and immediacy of emergency communication are fully considered, a combination of these two devices is ideal. The long-term rapid development of optical fiber, microwave, ultra-short-wave trucking, GSM and CDMA communication systems has created great convenience for people's daily work and life and has obvious significance for promoting economic development. Therefore, it is understandable that these communication systems have always been given the primary or important position by leaders at all levels in all levels of communication planning, investment and development. But at the same time, it is also necessary to pay attention to the construction of short-wave communication systems and the equipment of satellite mobile phones. Only by organically combining daily support and emergency communication support and playing a role together can we ensure unimpeded communication in peacetime, disaster and war. In fact, countries such as the United States have not only been vigorously developing satellite mobile phones but have never stopped or weakened the research and development of short-wave communication technologies and equipment. They are well aware that shortwave communications are and will be an irreplaceable means of emergency communications in times of war and disasters. We should be inspired and learn from the experience and lessons of disasters and the development trend.
