Lead Acid Batteries
TThe lead–acid battery is a type of rechargeable battery first invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Planté. It is the first type of rechargeable battery ever created. Compared to modern rechargeable batteries, lead–acid batteries have relatively low energy density. Despite this, their ability to supply high surge currents means that the cells have a relatively large power-to-weight ratio.
Lead-acid batteries may be familiar to you since they are the most popular battery for vehicles. They have a shorter lifespan than other battery options, but are the least expensive. They have high specific power, low specific energy and are capable of high discharge currents.
However, they are heavy and not environmentally friendly. Flooded lead acid batteries require ventilation and regular maintenance to operate correctly, which increases the chances of the battery leaking. They also have a low depth of discharge (DoD), so they need to be charged more often. The reliability of lead-acid batteries is great for off-grid solar systems, or for emergency backup storage in case of a power outage.
